General Introduction.  For a shorter overview, please read my Artist's Statement.

Painting, drawing, and digital photography are the main media I use, and from 2008 I have focused my efforts mostly in the direction of developing my painting.  My Christian faith, my relationships, and artistic contemplation and production, are the main driving forces in my life.

The relationship between the spiritual and material realm interests me.   Though I like playing with concepts, I see my own art primarily as a spiritual and emotional  activity.  It's a continual process of exploration.  Though my work is often thoughtful and some pieces do express a kind of logic, I am not interested in constucting a rigid framework of ideas around my creative process; the work itself is the main signifier....an articulation of fragmentary experience.  However,  I do see certain strands of meaning and emphasis emerging as I progress in my artistic practice, and enjoy expressing this in writing; often through poetic expression.  From time to time I share my artistic vision and give information on recent activities in the Journal section of this website.

In the past I worked intensively (2006 - 2008) with digital photography which I have always seen as a form of painting.  The smooth, glossy surface of a photographic print is so different from a painted surface, but a feature which I enjoy in its own right, and which has a wonderfully exciting potential of its own.  My work with metal, poetry, paint, and other media I have experimented with, relate to, and are often intergrated with, my digital photography. During 2008 I continued to experiment in various ways with  relationships between different media.  From 2009 onwards I started devoting more time to the development of my painting and drawing, as the greater powers of expression offered are too attractive to resist.

A large amount of my work has been concerned with an exploration of different surfaces, and I love photographic images and paintings in which multiple layers are visible.  This probably stems from my belief that life itself can be experienced either on a very superficial, purely materialistic level, or on a deeper spiritual level.  I also see the human being as wondrously deep, but often trapped behing self-defensive mechanisms and an exterior hardness.  Childhood and children have an important place in  many of my artistic expressions; it is their openness and creativity  which attracts me.

My work has a positive outlook and I think that it is often through suffering, touched by God's grace, that the beauty of the human soul is revealed.  I find the brokenness of human experience (tragic though it is) fascinates me, but also the potential for growth and renewal.  I like the idea of strength and vulnerability combined. Constructive human activities, alongside  decay and decline interest me.  The transitory nature of human life, and the possibility of eternity beyond it is a theme I often revisit. The mystery of faith, and its reality beyond our human rational mindset is something which underpins much of my work. My work has many different strands and I enjoy this diversity. I have no desire to restrict my work to any particular style or subject matter in an artificial way, but view it as a natural and evolving process.

I am extremely passionate about what I do, and I would like to see it used in very positive ways to enhance peoples experience of life. I hope in the future to be involved in creative projects with children and adults within my local community. It would be great to see my past teaching experience used in combination with my art and to work with, and learn from other artists.  I am also interested in liturgical art and how my visual and written work can be used within Christian worship. To bring a greater appreciation of the wonder and beauty of creation is an exciting and playful testimony to the love of God.

In the past I have worked in a variety of different roles in the public sector.  I  gained a BA Honours in Literature at Kingston University, Surrey in 1994, and a PGCE at Roehampton Institute in 1995. I taught in several schools before getting married and having children.  Towards the end of 2005, I decided to make it my aim to develop my dormant creative talent.

I hope you have found this interesting and enjoy looking at some of my work on the site. I like to create a place of contemplation and sometimes challenge.  I need funding to develop my work; most particularly to cover the cost of further training and also to enable me to exhibit my work further, so let me know if you want to contribute in this way.

I hope you enjoy looking around the site. If you are wanting a very quick overview, then the first place to look is the "Projects Page."

Do please contact me if you require any further information.

I think it important to experiment with many different materials, and am particularly fond of metal!
